GAP status
A four-tier classification of land protection, where 1 and 2 are managed for biodiversity, 3 permits multiple use, and 4 carries no protection mandate.
GAP status is how PAD-US makes federal, state, tribal and private conserved lands comparable. It answers the question a parcel map cannot: not who manages this land, but what may actually be done on it.
The line between GAP 2 and GAP 3 is the one that decides projects. GAP 3 multiple-use land can host mining, grazing and rights-of-way; GAP 1 and 2 generally cannot.
