Electrical substation map for the western states
Where you can actually connect — with max voltage on every point.
An electrical substation map is the closest public proxy for where a large new load can physically connect. Voltage at the station bounds what the interconnection can carry, which is why measured distance to a transmission-class substation is the first cut in almost every siting screen.

Why Substations matters
Interconnect cost is dominated by the distance between your meter and a substation of adequate voltage class. Every mile of new line is capital and easement negotiation, and easements across land you do not control are the most common cause of a site that looked perfect failing in month four. What a given substation can actually serve is a utility study result, not a map attribute — this layer narrows the list of substations worth asking about.
Questions Substations answers
- What is the nearest point I can physically interconnect at?
- What voltage class is that substation, and is it in the right range for my load?
- How much line would I have to build to reach it?
What is in the Substations data
Coverage: Western US substation inventory. Source dataset: Electric substations.
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Max voltage | Highest voltage class the substation handles. |
| Substation name | Operator's name for the facility, citable in an interconnection request. |
| Owner | Utility or transmission operator. |
| Type | Transmission, distribution or switching function where published. |
How we serve Substations
Substations render at the shared marker radius with voltage driving color, and the proximity tool measures true distance from any dropped pin so a site can be scored against real interconnect geometry rather than a county centroid.

Who uses Substations
Data Centers & AI Infrastructure
Power, water, fiber and permitting risk for every candidate site — before you send anyone to look at it.
Energy Development
Route corridors, site generation, and clear the environmental picture before the first landowner call.
Industrial & Manufacturing Siting
The same constraint stack as a data center, weighted for process load instead of compute.

Transmission Lines
High-voltage routes — the constraint that decides most data-center sites.
Power Plants
Every generating plant, its fuel, and its nameplate capacity.
Site Score Grid
Every layer above, resolved to one scored hex you can rank and defend.
IXPs & Carrier Hotels
Internet exchange points and carrier hotels — where latency is actually decided.
