Seismic design category
Also called: SDC
The building-code classification, driven by expected ground motion and soil conditions, that determines structural requirements at a site.
Design category is derived from mapped ground-motion values and the site's soil class. Higher categories require stiffer structures, more reinforcement, stricter equipment anchoring and more inspection.
For facilities with heavy floor loading and uninterruptible operations, the difference between categories can move the structural budget more than any incentive package a jurisdiction offers.
