NPDES permit
The Clean Water Act permit authorizing a facility to discharge pollutants to surface water under specified limits and monitoring.
NPDES permits set numeric effluent limits, monitoring frequency and reporting obligations. Coverage may be individual, general or stormwater-specific depending on the facility and activity.
Permits and their compliance histories are public, which makes them useful in two directions: as a risk signal about what is discharged upstream of your intake, and as precedent for what your own permit is likely to require.
