Interconnection queue
The ordered list of projects awaiting studies and approval to connect to the grid, now measured in years across most western regions.
Queues are processed in order, and each project's studies depend on the assumptions about projects ahead of it, so withdrawals cascade and timelines slip. Multi-year waits are now normal for large interconnection requests.
The queue is the reason bridge strategies exist. Behind-the-meter generation, siting at retiring thermal plants with existing interconnection rights, and co-location with generation are all responses to the same structural constraint.
