Behind-the-meter
Also called: BTM
Generation located on the customer's side of the utility meter, serving the facility directly rather than through the grid.
Behind-the-meter generation — typically gas turbines, increasingly paired with solar and storage — lets a facility operate without waiting for an interconnection queue position. It has become a mainstream bridge strategy for large loads.
It requires fuel supply, air permits and capital, and it usually still contemplates eventual grid connection. Pipeline proximity is therefore a screening criterion for any site where the interconnect timeline is the binding constraint.
