IXP (internet exchange point)
A shared facility where multiple networks interconnect and exchange traffic directly.
Exchanges concentrate networks in one place so that any participant can peer with any other over a single port. Participant count is the practical measure of an exchange's usefulness.
In the western US, meaningful exchanges cluster in a handful of metros. Distance from a candidate site to the nearest one is a real constraint on which workloads that site can host.
